The other seasons
The ornamental crab trees in our backyard provide beauty each season. One might think they are most spectacular in bloom; yes, there are terrific for the four or less days they flower in May. However, I mostly enjoy the bare architecture of these trees, the way the branches arch and cross over one another, sometimes like tracery, other times like capillaries. And then there are those small, inedible fruit, what results from the flowering. They look like the red gummy candies my mother used to put in a glass jar decorated as Santa, and they make for interesting photos, either in the foreground or background.
