The verdict: not dirty enough

My husband and I tried to watch Meek's Cutoff the other night. Heck, I've seen it on a number of best of lists for 2011, and Netflix streams it. I bailed on the movie and went to bed; my husband endured until the end.

The odd thing is that this movie has gotten good press. (I looked at a few reviews). But for us, the film presents credibility problems right up front. Here's why. The movie follows a group of pioneers on the Oregon Trail. They seem lost, both literally and existentially; in other words, the tasks seems much too difficult for them. But everyone looks so clean in clothing with hardly a speck of dirt. My husband and I works lots of hours outside in the summer, and we've got ready access to hot running water.

One might think we're too picky here at the Devine household. But c'mon. If a movie is about people who are outside who've got no access to modern plumbing and they look clean....well.... It's a problem.

I, too, watched "Meek's Cutoff." I knew it was a slow paced movie, but my goodness--it was even slower than I expected. By the end, I felt exhausted, as if I had slogged across the continent. I was struck by the tininess of the wagons, by the importance of water.

I wrote a review of it on my blog here: http://kristinberkey-abbott.blogspot.com/2011/12/light-candles-and-write-daily-and-be.html

What a good point. I loved the dirty hem of Michelle Pfieffer's dress in Dangerous Liaisons!
